Face lifting is a surgical intervention that aims to treat the signs of aging of the face, namely wrinkles and sagging.
WHO HAS INDICATION FOR A FACE LIFTING / RITIDECTOMY?
Anyone with skin sagging, wrinkles or depressions/grooves may be a candidate for a face lift. In fact, there is no ideal age to perform a face lifting; there are ideal candidates (whose age may vary).
Therefore, the ideal candidate will be the one with moderate skin sagging (which is no longer indicated for other non-invasive treatments), with wrinkles, grooves, or depressions throughout the face, with accumulation of fat in the “papacy” or on the bottom of the face (“cheeks”), non-smoking and who is able to maintain a daily routine of skin care (to be able to prolong the effect of his surgery).
HOW IS IT CARRIED OUT?
In fact, there are several surgical techniques to perform a face lifting. Thus, the choice depends on the type of result that is intended, the characteristics of the patient and the experience of the surgeon.
Face lifting is performed under general anesthesia and hospitalization can be 24 to 48 hours.
The incision (cut with scalpel) begins in the temporal region, in front of the hair, passes through the lower part of the ear and continues behind it. After removing the excess skin, the remaining skin is pulled up and back to give the best possible contour and the youngest appearance to the face.
CAN FACE LIFTING / RITIDECTOMY BE PERFORMED WITHOUT SCARS?
Like any surgery, face lifting cannot be performed without scars.
Nevertheless, the latest techniques allow to hide the scar, so that it is not easily visible. In addition, the scars become less evident over time.
Your Plastic Surgeon will be able to advise you on how best to treat your scars.
WHAT ARE THE ADVERSE EFFECTS?
The most frequent adverse effects are transient (transient) and disappear spontaneously. The most frequent are ecchymosis (bruising) and edema (“swelling”). Usually, ecchymosis disappears between 2 to 3 weeks and edema progressively improves in the first 4 weeks.
Sometimes there may be a feeling of numbness (which progressively improves between 2 to 4 weeks) or small irregularities in the skin, which will attenuate over time.
WHAT IS THE RESULT OF A FACE LIFTING / RITIDECTOMY?
The result of face lifting is the reduction of sagging and wrinkles of the face, the improvement and smoothing of the contours of the face and the improvement of your self-esteem, giving it a younger and more relaxed appearance.
However, the final result will only be visible 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, when the face is completely swollen, without bruising and the skin has already acquired its usual tonicity.
To obtain the desired result it is essential to comply with the postoperative recommendations.
Small touch-ups (filling with hyaluronic acid or fat) or scar corrections may be required, especially if a very flaccid skin lift has been done.
WHAT CARE AFTER SURGERY?
Usually, the patient is discharged between one and two days after surgery and can recover in the comfort of his home. Only in cases where the patient complains of indisposition or dizziness may it be necessary for more days of hospitalization.
We recommend using a compressive facial band for a period of 1 to 2 months to prevent edema (“swelling”) and bruises (“bruising”). Its use should be continuous in the first 2 weeks and then discontinuous (use at home and at night).
It is also advisable to perform manual lymphatic drainage to accelerate recovery, improve comfort and decrease edema and fibrosis associated with surgery.
WHEN CAN YOU RESUME THE ACTIVITY/ DAILY ROUTINE AFTER FACE LIFTING / RITIDECTOMY?
The return to your family life at home is done after 24 or 48 hours.
After 7 days you can put on your usual make-up and creams.
Generally, the return to professional activity is made about 15 to 20 days after surgery. In some cases, it may take a little longer, due to the extent of edema (swelling) and bruises (bruising).
WILL I GET BETTER AFTER PERFORMING SURGERY?
Face lifting/rhythecectomy is a surgical intervention that aims to provide an improvement in your physical appearance and also a boost of your self-esteem. However, the new image that you will acquire will not change, by itself, all other areas of your life (professional, family, social), so it is essential to have this awareness.
In fact, emotional balance is indispensable to undergo surgical intervention, especially if it is aesthetic in nature.
IS FACE LIFTING /RITIDECTOMY SAFE?
Like any surgery, the face lift is not without risks.
Thus, the first step is to consult a Plastic Surgeon, who is well experienced.
In addition, it is important to choose a clinic with an appropriate environment for consultation and surgery and choose the appropriate time to perform the surgery (at the social, personal, or professional level).
To this extent, you should talk openly with your doctor, ask all questions, clarify your goals and expectations, and listen to the possible results, the necessary postoperative care, and possible complications.
